Belmont Shore Residents Association

 MINUTES

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

February 11, 2010

The meeting was called to order by President Aileen Colon at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Vice President Terence Endersen, John Forstrom, Adam Hattan, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, Secretary Jeff Miller, Treasurer Robert O'Connor, and Mike Ruehle. Executive Board member Christopher Van Horn was absent. Twenty-two additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

The meeting agenda was approved. The minutes of the January 14 meeting were approved.

Debi Gurley, Librarian at the Bayshore Library, announced the "Long Beach Reads One Book" event, running from March 3 - 14. The week will include a musical performance at the Bayshore Library on March 4. This year's book is "The Soloist", by Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez.

Lt. Rosenthal from the LBPD spoke briefly; he did not report any neighborhood crimes. He provided no additional information when questioned about reported incidents of a "Peeping Tom" and automobile tire slashings in Naples.

Senior Planner Steve Gerhardt from the City of Long Beach Development Services spoke about the city's "2030 Plan", a process to update the General Plan. He presented a series of slides outlining the program and answered questions from the audience. Issues raised by the audience included funding, breakwater plans, population growth estimates, "placetypes", the "local coastal plan", and senior living facilities. Requests were made for more details of the plan and community meetings to discuss the plan.

Julie Maleki from Third District Councilman Gary Delong's office described the proposal being considered for traffic calming on Livingston, which would remove a westbound lane on Livingston from Quincy to Miramar and add a bicycle lane instead. There is no funding except possibly bicycle-related funding available.  A request was made to Julie to make the plans available on the Third District website.  Some concerns were expressed regarding the possibility that the slowing of traffic on Livingston would lead to increased traffic on Ocean Blvd in Belmont Shore. She also reported a traffic study of the intersection of Second St. and Claremont Ave., which indicated that no changes should be made.

President Aileen Colon reported the resignation of Erik Spence from the Executive Board.

Secretary Jeff Miller reported problems with email distribution from the web site; he will investigate other options for sending email.

Treasurer Robert O'Connor reported our checking account balance is $4,319.09.

Gene Rotondo, President of the BSBA, reported the results of the recent Chocolate Festival and future plans for a scavenger hunt and a golf tournament, with dates and details to be announced.

Vice President Terence Endersen reported these details of the recent meeting of the Beach Subcommittee at Councilmember DeLong's office: The restroom on the beach at Claremont should be completed before April, there are no funds for rebuilding the Leeway Sailing Center or the Belmont Plaza Pool, 45 moorings have been approved at the pier, new signs will be added to Dog Beach, "No Smoking" signs will be added at Alamitos Bay, and the handball court renovation is complete. The next meeting will be April 15. Mr. Endersen explained the request by a kite surfing vendor to place a shipping container on the beach. Parking changes in the beach lots were discussed, such as combining the lots, offering seasonal permits, free parking, and converting payment from meters to a single pay station, and enabling credit or debit card payments.

Due to the time constraint of our meeting location (the library building closes at 8 pm), these agenda items were not addressed: Parking Commission report, Old Business, and New Business.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 pm.
